Staveley Birkleas Nursing Home

Staveley Birkleas Nursing Home is in a residential area in Nab Wood, Shipley, close to the village of Saltaire, a World Heritage site. The home is registered to provide nursing care for up to 60 people, aged 18 years upwards, who have physical disabilities and are unable to look after themselves in their own homes.

Staveley Birkleas was initially two separate homes, which opened in 1983 and 1986 respectively. In 2004 the two homes became one following a number of adaptations and the completion of a purpose built annexe, creating an environment where people can move easily around the home and outside. The home provides mainly single en-suite rooms which are furnished and decorated to a high standard and include quality furniture, a nurse call system, television, telephone point and a safe.

People are encouraged to bring in as many personal possessions as possible to make their rooms their own. Many residents have brought in their own computers, music systems, items of furniture, small fridges as well as photographs, pictures and other mementoes.

There is a wide choice of different lounges and dining areas throughout the home many have televisions and music systems. There is a dedicated computer room with broadband and several of the lounges also have computers available. A wireless, ADSL Broadband Service is available, by request, throughout Staveley Birkleas. There is an activities room with a Wii-fit, a variety of games, books, arts and crafts and other forms of entertainment.

Our aim at Staveley Birkleas is to help each person live their lives to the fullest potential. We have a dedicated physiotherapy room with two full time physiotherapists and an adapted kitchen designed to aid rehabilitation and help people in undertaking everyday tasks. We have a wide range of specialist facilities and equipment to help us care for people with varying disabilities and needs.

There is a sunken garden with a pergola where residents can relax and enjoy being outside, as well as a variety of seated areas around the home where the gardens can be enjoyed.

Pallium status

In December 2011 Staveley Birkleas was awarded Pallium status by Bradford and Airedale NHS Trust. The aim was to increase the skills and confidence of staff when dealing with end of life care and to ensure the process was carried out in the most dignified manner possible. Staveley Birkleas is one of only five care homes to have taken part in the project since its launch and is only the second care home to have successfully achieved the standards set by the NHS. The home was assessed over a twelve month period with a designated mentor supporting the home throughout. A robust and challenging criteria was set by the NHS with 12 Charter Marks to successfully achieve in order to receive the prestigious certificate.
